Stop Renting Your Audience: Why Every Author & Speaker Needs an Offramp

You’re killing it on social… you’re getting a steady flow of new followers, your community is engaged, and they love your work. But do you have a contingency plan if those social platforms change their algorithm, or suspend your account, tomorrow?

Would your business survive? Or would you have no way to reach the people who care most about your message?

The hard truth: You don’t own your social media followers. The platform does. You have zero control over the algorithm or your access to that list. If all social platforms went dark tomorrow, how would you contact your fans about your new book? How would you invite them to your next event? How would you put your thoughts and musings in front of them?

I’m not suggesting you stop your social presence. What I’m saying is you need an off-ramp. You need a way for people to sign up for access to you outside of these platforms.

This is the power of the email list. This list is yours. You own it. Even if a platform bans you for life, you aren’t starting over from zero. You simply take your list to your next destination.

Your website is your home base. It should be the central hub for your news, your books, and your booking info. While you might not need a complex site to start, you must have a way to capture emails.

If you want to withstand the comings and goings of new tech and shifting platforms, you need two things: an email list and a website. If you do no other marketing this year, please start your email list.

My Recommendation:

The best starter platform? I always recommend MailerLite. It’s free for your first 500 subscribers, the user interface is incredibly intuitive, and you can easily design templates that look as professional as you are.

I have a referral link here: https://www.mailerlite.com/invite/91fc1befcee86. You do not need to click on that to sign up. If you do sign up with that link, you receive $20. If you upgrade, I receive $20.
