6 Social Media Mistakes You’re Probably Making (and how to fix them)

Are you making these social media mistakes? You get complacent, you quit posting, you quit engaging.

Check out this quick list of 6 mistakes people make with their social media strategy – and what to do instead.

1. Boring content

Have you ever posted a product photo with no context? Or maybe a post that has nothing to do with your business at all?

I’m guilty of this. You feel like you need to get something posted. Anything will do, right?

Wrong.

Think about what your ideal customer wants/needs to know. And then give it to them.

Think about what content will your ideal customer want to share with others? What will get them to engage with you? Create that.

2. Ignoring engagement

Never ignore a comment.

Even if someone posted an emoji – try to get the conversation going. The more comments and engagement on your post, the more algorithm reward you will get, and the better chance of someone else getting into the conversation.

Ways to spark engagement: ask questions, respond with a thoughtful reply.

3. Being inconsistent

Post consistently.

What does that mean? What posting schedule could you maintain?

Do you have time to post once a week? Do that. Make sure you show up every single week.

Do you have time to post once a month? Do that. And make sure you are there once a month.

What happens if you miss a month, a week, or a year? Don’t sweat it. And don’t mention your pause; jump back in. Chances are – people didn’t notice you weren’t posting.

Being consistent is rewarded by the platform, and you will have a better chance of reaching a wider audience.

4. Not doing research

Research where your ideal customers are hanging out at online. Show up there.

Research what their pain points are – then tell them how your product/service is the exact thing they need to win. You could use industry blogs or competitor websites to see what those pain points are if you aren’t sure.

If you use hashtags – research those. Which ones will get in front of your ideal customer?

5. Only posting on one platform

Do you look at only one social app? Most likely not, and the same goes for your ideal customer.

Use the research you did to locate where they are and use those apps.

You can post the same content on multiple socials. You may want to optimize them for each different platform, but that should take minimal time.

Facebook and Instagram make it easy to post to both at the same time, but if your ideal customer is on LinkedIn and X – spend your time there instead.

6. not tracking results

Tracking results can tell you a great deal about how valuable your content is.

Are you getting clicks and engagement on your carousel posts, but zero on your selfies? Quit posting selfies and double down on carousels.

Are you getting more engagement when you post Wednesday morning as opposed to Thursday evening? Post on Wednesday morning!

As promised – 6 quick mistakes and how to avoid them.

Have I made all of these mistakes myself? You betcha! Managing my client’s socials is always so much easier than managing my own. So, my social media is not consistent and boring, and I do not track anything.
